The Treasure Valley Artists Alliance (TVAA) was formed in 2010 through a series of conversations among local artists seeking an organization that could better support their needs. Visual artist Melissa Chambers partnered with Terri Schorzman (City of Boise Department of Arts and History) and Michelle Coleman (Idaho Commission for the Arts) to facilitate community discussions through a series of “Culture Café” events in late 2009.
From these gatherings, momentum quickly grew. A small group of artists began meeting monthly, identifying shared goals around education, exhibition opportunities, collaboration, professional support, and stronger community connection. By February 2010, the organization held its first board elections, adopted the name Treasure Valley Artists Alliance, and established regular meetings.
Early participation averaged 20–30 artists. Membership benefits and dues were introduced in March 2010, and membership grew rapidly—from 23 artists in April 2010 to over 100 within a year. Social and professional gatherings such as coffee meetups, studio visits, group events, and informal “artist mingles” helped strengthen the growing community.
In 2011, TVAA launched its first annual exhibition, Foray, hosted at Boise State Public Radio. The show featured more than 45 artists and welcomed over 500 visitors, many encountering local artists’ work in a public setting for the first time. Collaborative projects soon followed, including a community mural at Tour de Fat and participatory installations during downtown Boise’s Modern Art events. Partnerships also formed with organizations such as the City of Boise Department of Arts and History, Idaho Commission for the Arts, Boise State Public Radio, and other local arts and cultural groups.
Alongside in-person programming, TVAA built an early online presence through its website and Facebook page, providing artists with opportunities to share exhibitions, workshops, and portfolio work. The site also offered practical resources, including guidance on building websites, finding exhibition opportunities, locating art supplies and services, and staying informed about scams and fraud prevention.
In 2011, the board voted to pursue nonprofit status, developing bylaws and incorporating the organization as a 501(c)(3). The mission was formalized: to connect visual artists across the Treasure Valley in support of creative collaboration, professional growth, and community engagement.
Today, TVAA continues to build on that foundation as a member-driven organization led by working artists.
