Artist Statement
First of the series.
Inspiration: Transition between day to night. The end of a storm right at sunset. Oregon coast.
Style: I started from recycling a landscape painting from a photo and finished using my imagination to get the look I wanted.
Challenge: Getting the foreground to lay down and recede. Making the sand abstract yet still read as sand.
Series Development: In order to amplify the transition between day to night I used high contrast. Also, I kept the light warm and the shadows cool.
Changes in my life inspired a new series: Transitions. In the series I planned on depicting transitions such as day/night, past/present, and elderly/infant. As I progressed through the series the unexpected happened: my style started transforming. It is becoming conceptual, surreal, abstract and looser while maintaining a level of traditional realism. I combine working from photos, life, and imagination. I started recycling my old art and adding references from art history. My idea of what the painting is about may not be the same as yours but my art is transitioning from beautiful landscape to visual story.
