You are driving through flat desert, featureless high sagebrush steppe. When, all of a sudden, a huge gash appears across the landscape, five hundred feet deep, with castles, spires, fortresses and towers carved into the living rock of the canyon walls. And at the bottom, the Bruneau River, running high and fast, like an artery pumping life-giving water to the farms and ranches in this rugged country.
When I saw this, I knew I had to do a picture of it.
