Artist Statement
Ed Roberts is often called the father of the Independent Living movement and He was a pioneering leader of the disability rights movement. His admission into University broke the ice for other students with severe disabilities, who joined him over the next few years at what evolved into the Cowell Residence Program. The group developed a sense of identity and élan, and began to formulate a political analysis of disability.
Human rights matters are often complex. Art reflects one of the most fundamental human rights. Whether someone is creating art or observing it, the experience is personal, as it bears witness to the human experience. Art serves an important role in human rights advocacy. I believe that use of imagery influences societies, helping raise awareness of social and political issues.
