Chicken Out Ridge
Oil on canvas
Artist Statement
Chicken Out Ridge is the knife-like ridge at the final climb to the top of Borah peak. This painting is my somewhat abstract interpretation of the ridge and I sought to capture that feeling in your gut as you think about traversing the ridge in pursuit of apexing the peak.
An expressionistic painter focused on painting the geology of Idaho, I seek to tunnel into the unseen territory of a location’s soul to find the hidden qualities that mark the story of my subject. My notion of a soul’s portrait revealing itself lies in my childhood experiences exploring fields and hills, riding my horse, spending summers in the Sawtooths, adopting stray cats, and playing hide-and-go-seek with my dogs in the cornfields. The fields and mountains of Idaho were my playground. Wherever I go, every subject has a story to be told; I want to awaken those stories in the viewer.
