Rough-Legged Hawk
Acrylic
Artist Statement
I love to spend time hiking through the sagebrush steppe in southern Idaho. This time has exposed me to an incredibly diverse and beautiful landscape and its inhabitants. I became especially entranced with the birds that live there. I spend a lot of time haunting the Birds of Prey Conservation Area near the Snake River watching all the raptors who live there or just pass through. This was a surprise visitor, a Rough Legged Hawk. I hope my artwork introduces these birds to the public and that they will be as entranced and inspired by them as I am.
When I took my first art class I walked into the local art store clutching my supply list with stars in my eyes. The owner asked if he could help, I smiled saying, “Yes, as soon as I touch every single thing in this store.” Since that day I have designed and sold a line of Christmas cards, graduated with a BFA from Boise State and illustrated five children’s books. I paint with acrylics on canvas, watercolor and gouache on paper and my iPad, Apple Pencil with the ProCreate app. My artwork usually begins with a good ol’ sharpened pencil.
