Artists Statement
An Inipi (Sweat Lodge) is in process. Participants are gathered in shadow inside the enclosure with the Shaman. They wait for the Fire Keeper to bring the grandfather stones, which have been heating in the womb of mother earth, inside their enclosure to help warm up the darkness and lighten the shadows, so they can continue to participate in ceremony. The light and heat from the fire pit illuminates the Fire Keeper at his job. The surrounding area is cloaked in soft shadow, which helps to dramatize the lighting in the piece and the importance of the Fire Keeper’s job.
