Groundcover Triptych
Watercolor
Artists Statement
Spatial elements dominate this watercolor triptych. The common theme is Basque Lands in four countries and two continents: the Basque Provinces in Spain and France; Red Bay in Labrador, Canada; and in southern Idaho, USA. Left Image: hills in the Pyrenees in the heart of traditional Basque cultures. Middle Image: hills near Red Bay in Labrador/Newfoundland, where for about 150 years (1540s-1600) Basque whalers landed to render oil from their catches for European enterprises. Right Image: Boise Foothills, where young sheepherding immigrants melded their old and new cultures, laying the groundwork for enrichment of the region.
