Artist Statement
Maria’s pinhole panorama shows the hedgehog – and his chipmunk friend – relaxing among the mushrooms and greenery of their high desert garden. Pat added a whimsical house, even more mushrooms, and greenery more lush for the friends than the sparse plants present in the hot Boise summer.
Pat Kilby, a painter of quirky and colorful oil paintings, and Maria G. Essig, a photographer with a passion for pinhole photography, are creative colleagues who’ve long wanted to work on a project together. Collaboration Cure offered the perfect opportunity. Maria’s softly focused panoramic pinhole photos, printed on canvas, morph with Pat’s distinctive oils to create Augmented Reality – what we might imagine when we look at the scenes around us. Their collective hope is to invite the viewer to blur the line between what is “real” and what our imaginations can conjure.
