Artist Statement
My niece, Frankie Wyant’s interpretation of one of my favorite photographs of my cat, Sammy.
I showed my favorite photo of Sammy to my niece, Frankie, some time ago. Frankie was adopted at eighteen months of age from Ethiopia by my sister and brother-in-law in 2008. Now fourteen, Frankie has just started high school, is a phenomenal swimmer and is involved in everything from volleyball to horseback riding to sailing.
My job, as her uncle, is to encourage Frankie to explore her artistic side. So, I invited her to collaborate with me on an entry for Collaboration Cure. That’s where the photo of Sammy comes in. Unknown to me, Frankie had already been working on a painting based on the photo and planned to surprise me with it. So, when I asked her to team up with me for this project, she eagerly accepted and presented me with her painting. I was and am so impressed! Not only by her talent, but by her selflessness and generosity. I think she will have a very bright future.
