TVAA’s Salon des Refusés: Rejection Collection 2017

Opening February 24, 2017, the exhibition runs through April 14, 2017

Please note: the application deadline for this show has passed.

Prospectus

Since Napoleon paid heed to a group of outraged artists turned down by the Academy of Fine Arts’ Paris Salon way back in 1863, juried exhibitions have been known to pass over wonderful works of art in favor of … well, other wonderful works of art (OK, maybe a few clunkers here and there.)

So it is too, for our own Idaho Triennial, hosted every three years by the Boise Art Museum where art accepted into the exhibition is determined by a single juror. However, this year we thought it might be time to get a look at some of the pieces that didn’t make it into the big show.

Join our call for the 2017 Rejection Collection! TVAA hosts its own Salon des Refusés, and will accept one work from any Idaho artist who has officially been denied entry into the 2017 Triennial Exhibition.

Note: You must be either a member at the Artist level or the Exhibiting Artist level to participate. The hanging fee for the Artist level members is waived for this show. For information on joining TVAA please visit the Membership page.

Application Procedure

This exhibition is only open to TVAA members in good standing through the dates of the exhibition. Non-members may join at either the Artist level or the Exhibiting Artist level. The hanging fee for the Artist level members is waived for this show. ALL WORK MUST HAVE BEEN ORIGINALLY SUBMITTED AND REJECTED FROM THE BOISE ART MUSEUM’S 2017 TRIENNIAL EXHIBIT. NO ADDITIONAL WORK, OR WORK THAT HAS BEEN ALTERED SINCE SUBMISSION, ALLOWED. You may submit images of up to 3 pieces if they were all rejected, however our selection committee will choose ONE PIECE from each participating artist. Please include your name, title of work, medium, dimensions for each artwork, price if for sale, as well as your contact information. Click the Apply Now! button at the bottom of this page to begin your application. If you would like to join TVAA (and be eligible to exhibit in up to four shows annually), please click here.

Acceptance of Work

Current TVAA members (and non-members who join now) are eligible as long as they received rejection notices for the BAM Triennial 2017. Artwork selected for the exhibition must be available from the drop-off date through to the pick-up date. Substitutions will not be considered. If you think there will be a conflict in scheduling a particular artwork, please do not submit that piece. The Exhibition Committee reserves the right to exclude any artwork for any reason, including not being appropriately prepared for installation.

Hanging Devices and Special Instructions

Each accepted artwork should have an appropriate hanging device attached. Read this article for information on professional framing and appropriate hanging devices. If artwork is heavy, please make sure hanging device is suitable for weight and appropriate for sheetrock. Pieces without appropriate hanging devices will not be installed.

Delivery of Artwork

Accepted artwork must be dropped off at the offices of Boise State Public Radio, 220 E. Parkcenter Blvd. in Boise between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on Tuesday, February 21, 2017. All artwork must be labeled on the back with the artist’s name and the title of the piece. This is important for properly identifying each piece as signatures are sometimes hard to decipher. Artists will also be required to sign a release upon delivery of work.

Sales

Artists may provide email contact information for contact by potential patrons. Artwork for sale will have the works labeled with “Value $____”. Any work not for sale will be labeled NFS. When the show comes down if the work has sold, artists are encouraged to donate 10% to TVAA and 10% to Boise State Public Radio, retaining 80% of the sale themselves. Sold work must remain on exhibition for the duration of the show and will have a “red dot” on the label indicating the work has been sold. Purchases must be arranged by the individual artists and their buyers. Neither TVAA nor BSPR will handle any sales.
