Artist Statement
Part of the 2021 Old Penitentiary annual show, my piece was given the story line of hearing footsteps in the stairwells. In one of the photos, a sign hangs above a stairway saying, “No Climbing”; hence the title of this piece, “Climbing Anyway”. While shooting photos for this piece, I was struck by the intense emotions regarding incarceration that anneal to the penitentiary. I had the thought that there are as many types of incarceration as there are people who walk this earth. We all seek freedom form whatever “incarcerates” us. We all keep “Climbing Anyway”.
