Owyhee Mustang Solo
Digital Photograph, 18″ x 24″
This piece looks at the American Mustang in the light of the Sixth Extinction, the alarming dying off of wildlife in our age. From a historical perspective, the Mustang appears to be in trouble. As does so much of the old West. When the old West opened up, there were millions of wild horses on the range. Our government slaughtered thousands to disempower the Native Americans, cow them into submission. Today the government practices forced sterilization of Mustangs, which may not be able to breed enough to continue to occupy the few wild lands left to them.
In the words of the poet Rumi: “Who gets up early to discover the moment light begins?” The wild creatures of our world do. I am committed to honoring them with photographs.
