Artist Statement
This is the second work of the same subject, originally painted plein-air. While volunteering with habitat restoration at this location I stopped to view my surroundings and was amazed at the colors and sounds of this preserved wetland. I came back the next day to paint.
My art uses observation based subjects as a way to stay intimately connected to life in each moment. Preliminary processes include drawings in my sketchbook, usually a watercolor study, and possibly a photograph. The compositions are analyzed in the studio, or immediately for the plein air works. As I paint, the experience of applying paint to the ground becomes intensely focused and all encompassing. An evolution of the original subjects occur with my painting style and become more expressive statements filtered through my ingrained sensibility of formalism.
