I had completed chemotherapy and was beginning radiation. The lumpectomy had removed the cancer and left clear margins I was told. I didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of radiation, because radiation causes cancer. Through several late nights of research I discovered that secondary cancers may result from treating the first. Working a shift at an art coop, a woman, bald like me, walked in. She shared that she had breast cancer a few years earlier, now she had cancer in her blood, a common secondary cancer. A clear sign I thought. An insightful meditation followed. Bravely, I discontinued treatment.
