Koyaanisqatsi The assignment was Koyaanisqatsi. Koyaanisqatsi is a Hopi word for Life Out of Balance. It is also a ground breaking, film and musical score that influences so much art, music and photography, every day, 36 years later. Koyaanisqatsi… How perfect. For me my photography is one of my ways I keep my life, IN balance. When life: Making the bills. Living up to expectations. Failing to do so. Stress. Politics. Miscommunications. Missed deadlines. Missed opportunities. Missed connections. When it all IS TOO MUCH. Nature and expression, are my medicine. Moving through the atmosphere. Opening my eyes to the wonders around me. Seeing the “Oh wow” moments. Large and small. Breathing. Stretching. Challenging. Decompressing. Being there. In the moment. Seeing. Imagining. Capturing. Creating. Relating. Sharing. Being. Breathe… A photo assignment of Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out Of Balance. Koyaanisqatsi, the film, depicts different aspects of the relationship between humans, nature and technology using slow motion and time lapse photography and a minimalist musical score. The effect is hypnotic and thought provoking. Artistically, in contemporary imagery, the film’s influences are everywhere, every day. The assignment. Just what the doctor ordered! From a series of photos attempting to capture this impressive cloud formation being illuminated by intense sunset light above my beloved Boise front. I sorted through, and began to attempt to bring the power I saw and felt in the moment to life, in a photo. This one caught my attention. The massive clouds, their shadows and the man made objects in the foreground, both catching the horizontal sunlight. The challenge was to bring them out in contrast to one another. I worked, processing the image, for a long, long time without satisfaction. Then I tried black and white and realized the hills were just part of the backdrop in this drama between the power of nature VS the imposition of man. Koyaanisqatsi.
