Uighurs Threatened Traditions; Beijing
I celebrate and honor the 11 million Uighur people of China whose lives and Islamic ethnicity are persecuted by the Chinese government. One afternoon last summer I happened across two smiling, brave Uighur women performing traditional dances in a public park outside The Forbidden City in Beijing. They were at great risk of detention/enslavement in a “political re-education center.” Over a million Uighurs in China are being persecuted in an attempt to eliminate their cultural identity.
I often think about those two incredible women and wish they could know that I am paying tribute to them with my painting.
