Depression
Cyanotype on Fabric and Acetate Film, 24 x 18 Framed
Artist Statement
Depression creeps in paralyzing me. The amount of bad news bombarding me makes me feel helpless and discouraged. Around me, people are fighting to stay in their homes, fighting for justice, going hungry, and dying.
I know that I am in a place of privilege, we were still able to continue working, I am well and so is my family.
There are still days I feel hopeless and want to stay in bed.
Depression is part of a series commissioned by the COVID Cultural Commissioning Fund called Pandemic in Blue. I have also created a community art project with the help of Surel’s Place that includes artwork by over 50 Treasure Valley community members. Please visit my website www.jessieswimeley.com to learn more about this project.
Jessie Swimeley finds great joy uncovering beauty and significance in the insignificant. Her passion for photography started at the age of six when her father handed her a camera. Growing up in Wyoming she has always had a love of rural places and their history. Jessie uses digital and alternative process photography to give voice to the abandoned places and forgotten treasures of the West.
Jessie received her BA in Photography from the University of Oregon and is the President of the Treasure Valley Artists Alliance. Her work is held in private collections in the US, Europe, and Australia. Jessie’s work is shown regularly throughout the Treasure Valley in curated and juried exhibitions. She currently resides in Boise, Idaho with her partner Joel and Inky the cat.
