Heron Rookery
Photography
Artist Statement
In our area, we are lucky. We can still see whole flocks of herons nesting in rookeries. This is a reminder of the bountiful nature of our world, if it is undisturbed and allowed to thrive. We are lucky we can still see these things. If believers in the Sixth Extinction, which is said to be going on all around us these days, are correct, these glorious sights will not be available to our descendants. Worldwide, numbers of birds have been plummeting. This makes me yearn for the great flocks our ancestors were privileged to see.
Artist Bio
The poet Rumi asks, “Who gets up early to discover the moment light begins?” The wild creatures of our world do.
Rumi goes on to ask, “Who lets a bucket down and brings up a flowing prophet?” That’s what I hope to do with my photography. I am privileged to record the world of wild things. Their innocent abundance has a lot to teach our modern, disconnected world.
