Artist Statement
I went to Rediscovered books and bought a lot of books by Idaho authors or books about Idaho. I was so proud to see all the new authors and had already read quite a few of them. But I did find some new authors and books, and then had to make an Idaho bookshelf. Mainly these are the new authors but I also included some of my old favorites like Wallace Stegner’s Angle of Repose and Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping. And yes, the drawing and cutting out of letters reading backwards is some kind of demonic skill…one I have not mastered!
I love reading. It has always been a great form of escapism and edification for me. I love to be transported into other people’s lives and thoughts. And it’s truly how we can develop empathy and understanding for people and cultures we don’t know; we live in their shoes for a short while.
