The Linnet
Oil on canvas
Artist Statement
The linnet, from We Are Shadows, by Gail Park (in pre-publication), is a sign given in chapter five to the main protagonist of the supernatural presence of her deceased friend. It is sent to her as a message that she is on the right track as she hunts down clues to the parentage of her client. As this scene is set on the Dingle Peninsula, but not an actual location, the composition was created from various reference photos of flowers, birds, benches and courtyards.
As an artist, writer and genealogist, this project brought all my passions together. I have written and self-published several short stories, but We Are Shadows is my first “ghost” story. As I have an affinity for all things Irish (my ancestral lines are from Ireland), I set my story there and gave many of the characters names taken from my Irish ancestry. Although fiction, several of the events are based on actual incidents from my own life or from those whom I trust as truthfully portraying their experiences. It was a joy to be able to illustrate it as well.
